Sattva was engaged by an Indian business conglomerate to conduct a baseline impact assessment study of a Decentralised Solid Waste Management (DSWM) programme.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The objective of the study was to understand the current situation of solid waste management in 20 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Uttar Pradesh, India. The study aimed to establish baseline values for the project, assess waste generation and management practices, document the roles played by the community and ULBs, and evaluate the awareness levels among stakeholders.
STAKEHOLDER PROFILE
The study focused on 20 ULBs in Uttar Pradesh, India. The sample size consisted of 1800 households across different income wards in the ULBs. The study aimed to capture demographic markers such as age, gender, and the representation of underserved communities.
The study followed a descriptive cross-sectional design and was conducted in three phases: Design and Alignment, Data collection, and Data Synthesis and Documentation. The study was executed between April and July 2022. The sampling approach used a multi-stage stratified random sampling method to ensure representation of the population. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from households, ULB officials, solid waste management (SWM) staff, and implementation partners. Area observational walkthroughs were conducted to assess the situation of waste management in each ULB.
